Y is for Young

We have baby birds!  As I mentioned last weekend we discovered a birds nest with three blue robin eggs in it and we have been checking in on it daily.  Today we have babies!  Typically the momma bird flys away when she sees us approaching.  She will stand in the neighbor's yard, a safe distance away, and keep her eye on us as we quickly peek in on the beautiful eggs.  This morning Troy was doing some work on that side of the house and noticed that the momma let him get incredibly close before she flew off.  A quick peek inside revealed two babies.  Momma did not go very far away this time and she yelled at us the whole time to get away.  We were not trying to disturb them (Troy was picking up some trash nearby), but since she had left the nest we took advantage of the opportunity to quickly look at the precious babies.  There were two little ones in there and they looked like they had just popped out of the eggs.  Hopefully the third one will soon be following in their footsteps.

I can't believe how tiny (and featherless) they are!  Even though they are small, so small, I am still amazed that they came out of those itty bitty eggs.  I would imagine a good stretch would feel good after being cramped inside there for so long.  Our babies look just like the ones in the photo, mouths open and all.  I did not take a picture because I wanted to get out of momma's way as quickly as I could.  It is her job to protect and care for those babies and I'm doing my best to stay out of her way so that she can do that.  I wish I could just sit and watch them all day.

Here is a You Tube video of baby robin's hatching for those who are interested.  Looks just like our babies!
